Glossary
Terms we use around mockups, packs, and the catalog.
A
- Aspect ratio
- The width-to-height relationship of a frame. Backdrop stills are shot to leave usable room for common mockup crops, including landscape pages and square social posts.
- Asset
- A single downloadable image in the catalog. Assets are grouped into packs that share a material, finish, and color temperature.
B
- Backdrop
- The scene behind a product in a mockup. Also the name of this catalog: curated background stills for portfolios, device frames, and social posts.
- Backdrop Pro
- Annual access to the full catalog, including new packs as they are added. Separate from buying a single pack.
- Brand Pack
- A custom commission of exclusive images made for one brand, with a defined scope and usage rights. Priced separately from catalog packs.
C
- Catalog
- The full set of published Backdrop packs. The home page is the catalog; individual pack pages show one family of images.
- Color temperature
- How warm or cool a scene reads. Matching the background temperature to the product lighting keeps a mockup from looking assembled.
- Commercial use
- Using an asset in client work, marketing, or a product you sell. Catalog licenses cover personal and commercial presentation of your own work; they do not transfer ownership of the photograph.
- Crop
- The portion of an image you actually use. A good background still has a quiet center and some edge falloff so different crops still hold a product.
D
- Depth of field
- How much of the scene stays sharp. Softer falloff at the edges can keep attention on the product without making the background look fake.
- Device mockup
- A presentation that places a UI inside a phone, laptop, or browser chrome, then sits that object on a background. Backdrop images are made for that second layer.
F
- Falloff
- The way light or focus softens toward the edge of a frame. Useful falloff gives a mockup a place to sit without a hard horizon behind it.
- Finish
- The surface quality of a scene: matte paper, wet stone, brushed metal, film grain. Packs are grouped by finish so a set of frames feel related.
G
- Grain
- Fine texture from film or a digital treatment. Light grain can make a mockup feel photographed. Heavy grain starts to fight sharp UI.
H
- Hero
- The primary image on a page or launch post. A hero mockup usually needs the quietest background in the set.
L
- Lifetime access
- A one-time purchase that unlocks the catalog permanently, including packs published after the purchase.
M
- Mockup
- A composed image that shows a product as if it already exists in the world. The background is what makes the composition feel finished instead of like a screenshot.
P
- Pack
- A named set of related background images, usually twenty stills. Sold individually or included with full catalog access.
- Preview
- The compressed image shown in the catalog and on pack pages. Downloads are the full-resolution files.
S
- Scene
- The photographed environment in a still: a table, a wall, a landscape, a material study. Backdrop scenes are kept empty so the product can be the only object.
T
- Texture
- Visible surface detail in a background. Enough texture keeps a frame from reading as a flat fill; too much texture competes with type and UI.
V
- Vignette
- A slight darkening toward the edges of a frame. Used sparingly, it holds the eye on the product without looking like a filter.
